The Pittsburgh Steelers are in a tough spot as they try to find their quarterback post-Ben Roethlisberger. What did their offseason decisions show us about their 2025 season?
What will the Pittsburgh Steelers do at quarterback?
The draft came and went, and besides a sixth-round pick on Will Howard, the quarterback position remains unresolved. Every team carries four quarterbacks into training camp, so they are going to sign someone. Is it Aaron Rodgers? If Rodgers misses any offseason workouts and is coming in from a new team, does the team even have a chance next year? It is asking for a lot for him to come in cold this summer and build the chemistry needed to make a run. However, the Steelers’ roster is in place for a quarterback. What happens?
How does Kaleb Johnson impact Jaylen Warren?
With Najee Harris out of the picture, there was a small span of time where Jaylen Warren looked like a great bet in fantasy. However, in Kaleb Johnson, the Steelers found a back who could carry significant work between the tackles and a better scheme fit for Arthur Smith than Harris. The Steelers clearly think Warren is only so productive due to his role and limited workload, so that will remain. Do not be shocked if Johnson has the same number of carries as Harries had last year.
Who starts in the slot on offense?
The Pittsburgh Steelers have two big bodies in DK Metcalf and George Pickens on the outside. They will likely roll with two tight ends often, but when they go into three-wide sets, who will join them? Calvin Austin took a big step last year, but his emergence is a reminder that a lost rookie season is not the end of the world. Does that apply to Roman Wilson now? Do the young wideouts struggle, causing them to play Robert Woods?
Who starts in the slot on defense?
The Steelers’ defensive lineup is mostly sorted out, aside from the slot. Beanie Bishop manned the role last year, but the Steelers signed Brandin Echols, drafted Dante Kent, and even added UDFA Sebastian Castro, who may compete for a roster spot. Two of these four will make it, and one will start.
Is the offensive line ready to step up?
The Steelers’ offensive success will come down to the quarterback, but the line may have a big say as well. They are relying on some big changes from a young group. At center and right guard, they have two starters entering their second year, and a step from both will be crucial. At tackle, Broderick Jones has struggled at right tackle, but now will shift back to the left side. Does that help? At right tackle, they need Troy Fautanu to stay healthy. These are two first round picks, but neither has shown much yet. What do the Steelers get?
