It’s April — birds are chirping, dogs are barking, its beautiful — and its almost time for 32 football teams to set their focus on Green Bay, Wisconsin for the upcoming NFL Draft. Speculation and mock drafts have been all over the place and the takes are flying. The Draft brings optimism to every fan that their favorite club will undoubtedly improve with the addition of young talent. All the uncertainty and opportunity makes this one of the most fun times in the whole NFL calendar.
Here are some of MY top questions remaining before Thursday’s draft:
1.) WTF is Aaron Rodgers doing?
This dude loves keeping his name in the news. The whole world thought he was going to announce his signing during Pat McAfee’s ‘Big Night Aht’ but alas, Mr. Rodgers was nowhere to be found. If I was in-charge of the Steelers I would have moved on by now and started leaning into a rookie selection, whether it be this year or next. There’s a lot of talk that they could have a good chance at Shedeur Sanders at 21 and it will be interesting to see how much Pittsburgh values him with the divisional rival Browns rumored to be interested as well. It’s also no secret the Steelers are interested in Jalen Milroe and with the recent surge in first round interest for the Alabama QB, they have to be considering him at 21 as well.
And if the Steelers truly don’t want to rely on a rookie QB with this aging roster after the Pickett fiasco, when will they pivot to Kirk Cousins?
2.) Where will Shedeur Sanders call home?
Arguably one of the most polarizing prospects of the last decade, we’re days away from the draft and still don’t really have a good feel for where Shedeur’s next huddle will be. There’s a lot of talk that the New Orleans Saints could be interested at 9 with Derek Carr’s recent injury update, and as mentioned before the Steelers have recently been tied to the Colorado quarterback. But, I like the Browns right now. I think they’re trying to figure out a way to get Travis Hunter at 2, and then get back into the first and keep the duo together while also locking-in the 5th year option for their QB of the future.
3.) Is Ashton Jeanty really going to be a Raider?
Ever since Las Vegas Raiders GM, John Spytek, made comments earlier in the offseason that his family would “walk out” on him if he didn’t draft Jeanty, it has been all but locked-in that they would be picking the Heisman runner-up with the 6th pick. However, that roster needs a lot more than an upgrade at RB. I think after focusing on adding offensive pieces this offseason, their best move will be to improve their defense with this pick and they could have their choice of the top cornerbacks in the draft.
If the Raiders pass on Jeanty at 6, I think there’s 2 teams that will be fighting to snag him up: the Chicago Bears and the Dallas Cowboys.
The Bears and Ryan Poles have ignored need for an electric offensive option before, and they could very well do it again. I think similar to the Raiders, the Bears could definitely benefit from bolstering their defense, however after appointing offensive wiz kid Ben Johnson as their new HC will he be looking to find his version of Jahmyr Gibbs in Chicago, or maybe Sam LaPorta?
If Jeanty somehow finds his way past both of those teams and is still on the board at 12, the Cowboys will be hard pressed not to scoop him up. Jerry Jones isn’t one to shy away from drafting an RB in the first round and the Dallas offense desperately needs to improve their run game so the fit makes sense.
4.) How many wide receivers will be selected in the first round?
There is a large consensus that Arizona’s Tetairoa McMillan will be the first receiver off the board in this year’s draft, then after that a very good chance Matthew Golden of Texas is selected next. After those two, it’s a toss up. I think there’s 2 other wide receivers that very well could go in the first round: Luther Burden and Emeka Egbuka. The Chargers, Commanders and Bills are all potentially in the market for wide receiver and I wouldn’t bat an eye if both those guys ended up going toward the end of round 1.
5.) How many draft day trades will there be in the first round?
I find it entertaining when teams can intelligently move around the draft board. This year however, depending on what your team is needing, to do so could be more difficult than ever. There are far more teams looking to stockpile capital than to make bold moves, which means trading back will be the popular thing to do and there will be less suitors to trade with. I think there will be 1 draft day trade in the first round and it will be for one of the falling quarterbacks.
