There is always attention on the Dallas Cowboys and every move they make is under the microscope. What questions emerge from the offseason?
Who will emerge as the top running back?
The Dallas Cowboys got 1,300 yards from scrimmage from Rico Dowdle, and he may be the Panthers’ third running back this year. So, the role could be valuable if the right player steps in. They added Javonte Williams and Miles Sanders in free agency, then drafted Jaydon Blue and Phil Mafah. Mafah is size and power, Blue is speed, and the best pass catcher of the group.
There is a small chance that Blue has the Devon Achane eruption, where his role is valuable enough in terms of carries, but that is a lot to ask from a fifth-round rookie. One of Mafah, Sanders, and Williams may be in for a lot of work on the ground. The best bet to start would be Williams
Do they trust their non-CeeDee receivers?
The Dallas Cowboys were rumored to take a wide receiver in the first round, so it was a bit of a surprise to see them run back the same group, with no pick late and no real addition in free agency.
Lamb is going to be fine, but they are asking a lot from Jalen Tolbert and Jonathan Mingo, two players who have done very little in the first three and two years, respectively.
Will key injuries derail the 2025 defense?
The Cowboys’ defense has some talent on paper, but two key names are going to hurt them early on. Trevon Diggs had knee surgery last year that will put him in question to start week one. DeMarvion Overshown seems even less likely to be out there by then. They lost Jourdan Lewis, DeMarcus Lawrence and have a new defensive coordinator. It may take time for this group to find its legs.
Do they have enough pass rush opposite Micah Parsons?
As noted, without Lawrence, the defense lost some star power. They got younger with Donovan Ezeiruaku, but he fell to round two because he lacks burst and struggles to set the edge. Dante Fowler can set the edge, but this is a drop-off from Lawrence. Marshawn Kneeland may have a lot on his plate in year two, but he missed most of his rookie year with a knee issue. It is Parsons or bust.
Can the offensive line take a step?
The offensive line is young and has a lot of resources put into it, which is typical of Dallas. Still, Tyler Guyton looked questionable as a rookie, and Tyler Booker will be a rookie. Cooper Beebe is entering year two as a center, and the progression of these three former draft picks may determine what Dallas can do this season.
